Broken bones are quite common in our society. In fact, one estimate predicts that every person in the United States will have two broken bones over the course of their lifetime. Wow, right? So, you can imagine how encouraged we were to learn about a study that is showing great promise using CBD to help heal and strengthen bones.
This study was conducted by the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. Researchers gave rats with broken bones either CBD or a combination of CBD and THC. The study showed that bones treated with CBD healed faster without the THC. Additional research supports these claims and even suggests that CBD not only helps bones heal but also may help prevent disease and slow down bone degeneration, most notably for people with bone disease such as Osteoporosis.
CBD and Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis or “porous bones” is extremely common in people over the age of 50, representing about 53 million Americans. This represents more than half of the people in this age group. The main issue that people become concerned with who have this disease are broken bones. Broken bones, especially hip fractures are more serious as we age. According to the Journal of American Medical Association, nearly 65,000 women die from complications of hip fractures each year and the risk of death within six to twelve months after a hip fracture is an astounding 25%.
Doctors say the density of bone represents the balance between two types of cells, osteoblasts which help produce bone and then osteoclasts which are the cells that degrade bone. New research has identified a cell receptor that when activated increases bone degeneration or loss. In this study appearing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers demonstrated that CBD blocked the activation of this receptor and thus reduced the activity of osteoclasts or bone loss. This is amazing information because there is currently no cure for osteoporosis. There are pharmaceutical drugs that can slow the progression of the disease, but all have negative side effects, not found with natural products like CBD.
Endocannabinoid System and Osteoporosis
The endocannabinoid system plays an essential role in regulating the osteoclast and osteoblast cells. Therefore, if there is a problem within the endocannabinoid system, complications with bones such as osteoporosis disease are likely. The endocannabinoid system consists of cannabinoid receptors called CB1 and CB2 and they can be positively activated by several elements including CBD. Research suggests when CB1 and CB2 receptors are stimulated with the help of CBD, the bones are more likely to maintain function.
CBD for Osteoporosis
The next logical question is how much CBD should be taken to help maintain a healthy skeletal structure or help strengthen bones using CBD. Unfortunately, CBD is not a one size fits all supplement. In fact, each person’s endocannabinoid system is individual. The amount you take depends on your own system and is based on nothing else including age or weight. As a rule of thumb, start low and slow. On average a serving of 25mg of full spectrum CBD a day is effective for most people. However, if you are suffering with pain you may need to take more. You can increase the servings slowly over a week to determine what amount works for you. For more information about how to determine the right serving read more here. As always, we recommend discussing CBD with your physician.
